- Providing legal notice to creditors (giving them a minimum of six months in which to file claims against the estate)
- Arranging the marshalling, inventory and appraisal of the estate's assets (and filing that information with the court)
- Paying off legitimate debts of the estate (and disputing others when warranted)
- Filing a final report with the court, including an outline of the proposed distribution of the remainder of the estate
- Distributing the remaining assets and property in accordance with the decedent's will or the state's intestacy statute
- Closing the estate
